MOUNTAIN VIEW VOICES FOR PEACE
Update -- December 29, 2006

[NOTE: Many people are not checking their e-mail regularly over the
holidays. If you know people who may be interested in the upcoming
vigil, but who are unaware of our plans, please let them know.]

The latest official count of U.S. troops dead in Iraq is 2996! The total
could reach 3,000 by the end of 2006.

The day after the 3,000th death is reported, we will gather at 6 pm at
the corner of Castro and El Camino Real. People in neighboring cities
may take similar actions. There will be events across the country. "Stay
tuned" for the exact timing.

We will mourn the dead, pay our respects to their families and others
directly impacted by the war, and reinforce our resolve to bring all
American troops home.

The bad news from Iraq keeps getting worse, but at least it's in the
news. The American public has turned clearly and decidedly against the war.

So what is George W. Bush's response? He is ignoring even the weak
recommendations of the Baker Commission. He is apparently encouraging
the prompt execution of Saddam Hussein. And according the press, he is
making plans to escalate the war.

This is a critical time for the anti-war movement and the nation as a
whole. We must transform the war's unpopularity into a show of force to
demand that the troops be brought home. The politicians who have
benefited from Bush's failure must be pressured to actually do something
about it.

Personally, I don't want to have to plan an event marking the 4,000th
death. Or even 3100!

Our next meeting will be at 7:30 pm on TUESDAY, January 9, at the Willow
Park Condominium clubhouse, Moffett Blvd. at Middlefield Rd., Mountain
View. We will be making plans to send a delegation to the national
anti-war mobilization in DC January 27-29.
