Here are notes from the Los Altos voices for Peace Meeting on July 10th.
Please join us at Foothills Congregational Church (451 Orange Avenue), Learning Center, 7 p.m. for our next meeting on August 14th.
*Speaker:
Our Speaker was Kim Hunter, who shared her experiences from the Peace Walks across the US and Soviet Union. Twenty years ago, Kim (then a student at UCLA) and 1,200 other people started a walk for peace across the US. They began on March 1, 1986 and completed the walk on November 16th. They walked about 15 miles per day, and due to funding and other problems, only 500 of the original group finished. However, people joined the walk along the way as others dropped out. At the end of the walk, there were 1,300 people. The experience for Kim and so many others was positive and life-changing.
The following year, Kim joined 225 other people to walk for peace from St. Petersburg to Moscow, which took a month in the summer. The Russian people were friendly, emotional, extremely helpful and wanted to be involved in the walk for peace.
To mark the 20th anniversary of the US peace walk, Kim chose to talk about her experiences to the Los Altos Voices for Peace Group. We were honored.
*Clean money Initiative qualifies for November ballot
Katrina talked about the Nurse's clean money initiative, which is Proposition 89 on the November ballot. The other clean money initiative is stalled in a state committee, so it is great that Prop. 89 is moving forward. The public financing would come from a corporate income tax of two tenths of 1%. Education of the public is key. Should be put on a presentation about Clean Money and Proposition 89? It is very important to pass this measure.
*Report on our booth, Art and Wine festival
LAVP had a booth at the Art and Wine Festival July 8 and 9, which was shared by the Clean Money Campaign. Our booth was located with the other non-profit groups and the best way to get people's attention was to stop them as they were passing by. If we want to participate next year, we need to become a 501C4 organization.
*Los Altos Community Picnic - September 10th
LAVP will have a booth at this event which will be similar to last year. Signups will be solicited at the August meeting.
Los Altos Farmer's Market
The Los Altos Farmer's Market is each Thursday on State Street. LAVP will continue to have a table at the market when there are enough volunteers.
* LAVP Who are We
This was revised in June 2006 and is available each time we have an event were we are tabling.
* Tee Shirts or visors
We sold our last LAVP tee shirts and the idea of making visors the next time was suggested.
*Annual renewal application from Foothills Church
LAVP will donate $100 to Foothills Congregational Church for the use of their learning center for our monthly meetings (second Monday of each month).
Peace Alliance Foundation
LAVP will be listed on the Peace Alliance Foundation, which is a listing of peace groups which are active.
*Treasurer's Report
LAVP has $447.25 of unrestricted funds available
Foothill College Student "Peace Scholarship"
Karen Lemes talked about the Foothill College student scholarship. LAVP can become a scholarship sponsor and we agreed that a $500 scholarship would be appropriate for our group. There are about 50 scholarships offered each year, with about 150 students applying. Donors and recipients come together once a year to present and receive the scholarships. LAVP will offer a scholarship in March of 2007.
*Book recommendation
September Snow is a paperback by a local author and is recommended reading.
Department of Peace
February 3-5, 2006 is the date for the annual Department of Peace Conference
