Here is a recap of the Los Altos Voices for Peace meeting on June 12th. Our next meeting is July 10th at 7pm. Please join us at Foothills Congregational Church (451 Orange Avenue), Learning Center. If you want to be on the agenda, contact Kevin O'Reilly, who will be leading the July meeting.

Ray Schuster led the meeting, which began with an inspirational reading about peace. We will start each meeting this way to remind us of our mission and purpose for coming together.

--Arts and Wine Festival - July 8th and 9th
LAVP will staff a table for the entire weekend. Our booth will be in the are with other non-profit organizations. If you can volunteer for a shift, please contact Judy Baker as soon as possible.

-- GSA Parade - 27 groups participated in the Gay, Straight Alliance Parade on June 4th . Members of LAVP marched behind our banner and there was a lot of cheering from the crowd. It was a very moving experience to participate in such a positive event and support the young people of Los Altos High School. There were many interesting Letters to the Editor in the Town Crier about this event. It was covered exceptionally well in the San Jose Mercury and the Palo Alto Daily News.

--Status of the California Clean Money campaign
June 27th is Clean Money day and the South Bay Clean Money group is sharing the Farmer's Market booth with LAVP. Donna attended the Clean Money meeting last Thursday and reported that there is not much progress on AB583, the clean money bill in the California legislature. It is still in the elections committee and is not expected to pass since only Debra Bowen, the chairperson, really supports it. It is not known why Gloria Romero, a Democrat from southern California, and Kevin Murray, another Democrat do not support it. We are waiting to learn if the Nurses' clean money initiative has qualified for the November ballot.

-- Movie: "An Inconvenient Truth" with Al Gore
This is an outstanding movie on global warming. It has had rave reviews in the press and will play as long as the the public shows up to see it. It is playing at Palo Alto Square and Santana Row. Some in LAVP are leafleting patrons as they leave the movie with a flyer that connects clean money with improved actions to stop global warming.

    --LAVP'S Farmers Market involvement
We are staffing a LAVP booth each week that we have volunteers and will share the booth with the Clean Money Campaign. There was discussion on the location of the table and what times are best to staff it. The poster at the table will be updated to reflect current Iraq war causalities are our areas of focus.

    --Review of the LAVP brochure
We were given copies of the Los Altos Voice for Peace brochure and were to make inputs to Ray Schuster by last Thursday if we had any changes. rayschuster2000 at yahoo.com or fax changes to 650/949-0597.

    --Los Altos Community Picnic 9/10/06
The date of this event is September 10 and Karina is our representative on the planning committee. A full report will be given at our next meeting. We will have the same activities for families that we offered last year, which were a big hit.

    --Foothill College student "peace scholarship"
Karen Lemes presented this idea at the May meeting, and we will discuss it at our next meeting.

--Special items for consideration from Bernice Fischer
Bernice shared her ideas, concerns and actions she is taking regarding peace issues. The International Day of Peace is September 21st. It was great to hear from her since her move from Los Altos to Palo Alto.

    --A look ahead to 2007
Barbara & Kevin O'Reilly proposed the idea of educating ourselves and others about the World War II alien internment. John Christgau has written a play and book about the subject and it relates to how the US Government is treating people during the Iraq war.

  --US Department of Peace
Vince reported that 71 Representatives from the House have signed to support the creation of a Department of Peace. We need to contact Anna Eshoo to encourage her to sign on as well.

  --Possible presentation to LAVP
Twenty years ago, Kim Hunter walked across the US on the Great Peace March. It took 9 months, walking 15 miles per day. They lived in tents, and met all kinds of wonderful & challenging people. The following year she walked in Russia from what was then Leningrad to Moscow. We have invited her to come to one of our upcoming LAVP meetings to do a short presentation about her experiences.
