PRESENTATION by Jonathan Dona, recipient of the Larissa Keet Peace
Scholarship award at Foothill College, spoke of how he is promoting
peace.. He works as a Sunday School teacher, keeping peace among
20 young students, 9-11 year olds. He spoke also of his personal
experience of holding a grudge against someone who hurt a friend. For 2
years he didn't speak to this person, until he realized that this
"hatred" was eating at him. He asked for forgiveness and reconciled
with this person. He now actively promotes peace. He plans to become
a doctor and hopes to help people and to work for peace locally.
All present were impressed with Jonathan's maturity and efforts to
spread peace. Aubrey Keet, widower of Larissa Keet, was present, as was
Jonathan's father, David.

MILITARY RECRUITING AT FOOTHILL: A visitor, Mary Ellen, talked of
seeing a student at Foothill College surrounded by 3 recruiters and
possibly being enticed to join the Military, She and others present
believed that this behavior was inappropriate to a community college
campus. Discussion of this topic will continue at the next meeting.

TREASURER: Katrina reported $1500 in the treasury for future Larissa
Keet Scholarships and $272 in unrestricted funds. All bills are paid.

FARMER'S MARKET: report by Ruth, Paul and Donna about how helpful
the Linden Tree bookstore owners, Linda and Dennis Romberg, are. A
"Thank you" card was passed around the room and will be delivered to
them. Hours are 6 to 8 PM. It is most productive to give leaflets
to people waiting on line to eat. MORE VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED.

COSTS OF WAR: report by Ray and Sami: 3/4 trillion dollars for the
war so far, $58 billion for the state of California
proportionately, and $1.76 billion for Anna Eshoo's district. Loss
of human life and property destruction, of course tremendous.

DEPT OF PEACE: report by Paul and Vince, who read a letter from
Anna Eshoo from June 2007 regarding her opposition to the bill, HR
808. People are invited to Dept of peace group meetings.
Email Silicon Valley Dept of Peace, <mailto:svdepofpeace at aol.com>
svdepofpeace at aol.com for more information.

LAVP WEBSITE: needs work and Ray is facilitating this, but the
person helping him is recovering from an injury.

CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATES: will be invited to the next meeting and/or
October's meeting. Katrina invited the incumbents, but has not heard
from them. Ray will submit questions to those willing to come.
Darwin will invite the 2 challengers, Randall Hull and Megan Satterlee.

LAVP will also try to invite candidates for trustees to the
Foothill-DeAnza College District.

ROTARY CLUB'S PEACE THEME: Inquiries by Ray about the local Los Altos
chapter were answered that the Rotary has always had peace as a goal.

MV VOICES FOR PEACE: Inquiries by Ray about possible joint efforts with
LAVP were answered that there are no specific events currently planned.
We will keep in touch.

OUT OF IRAQ: Larry presented the countrywide meetings of MOVE ON ,
and there will be an intensive campaign to move "Out of Iraq."
At noon on August 16, there will be a presentation at Palo Alto
City Hall with the Raging Grannies . Peter Drekmeier, PA City
Councilman, has been invited. A large Vigil will be held on Aug.
28 at Lytton Plaza at 5:45 PM. It was agree to cosponsor both
events. It was suggested by Barbara O and agreed by all, to
have a vigil in Los Altos on Aug,28 at 5:45 PM at Singer Plaza
and preparations will be made for this.

AGENDA NEXT MONTH:
Sami will chair the next meeting. Discuss the military on
Foothill Campus. Other matters and follow ups will be presented.
