June 11th LAVP meeting notes:

After introductions and an inspirational quote, the following business was conducted:

    Reports:

Treasurer - Katrina reported $1,400 in the treasury for the Foothill College Scholarship fund and $492 in unrestricted funds. Some of the $492 are earmarked for upcoming events

Community Picnic - Katrina reported that the LAVP booth for the September 9th (11am-3pm) Community Picnic will be similar to the past years and volunteers are needed for the booth as well as for the general picnic. It is a great event to attend and lots of fun.

Note: We will not have a booth at the Los Altos Art and Wine Festival July 14 & 15, but will try to split a booth with the League of Women Voters at the Fall Festival. We would do on day and they would do the other. It is a 2 day Festival.

"Costs of War" - Ray Schuster would like input on a letter his is working on for the Los Altos Town Crier about the costs of war on a local level. Please e-mail him your inputs.

Department of Peace Update - Vince announced that there are 65 co-sponsors (all Democrats) in the US House of Representatives that are in favor of establishing a Department of Peace in Washington DC. He proposed that people from LAVP drop by Anna Eshoo's office once a week to talk about establishing a Department of Peace. We agreed that it was a good idea, but need volunteers.

Challenge Team - Barbara Kyser will attend the last Challenge Team meeting for the academic year on June 14th at 7am. It is an important group that is working on local violence-prevention issues for young people in the Mt. View-Los Altos areas.

Larissa's Peace Scholarship recipient will attend a future LAVP meeting and report on his Peace project.

  New topics:

Tabling at Los Altos Farmer's Market - Paul Engstrom and Ruth Cole will table for LAVP at this Thursday's Farmer's Market. Donna will help them with the materials related to the establishment of a Department of Peace & Clean Money

Honoring Cindy Sheehan - Vince suggested that we submit a press release to local newspapers as a thank you to Cindy Sheehan for her efforts to end the Iraq war. He will draft it and send it to the steering committee for input.

An improved LAVP website - we discussed ideas for our new website. They included LAVP history, calendar of events, press releases, video clips, text from Patriot Act, news coverage of LAVP, peace vigil photos, links to relevant news articles, Department of Peace information and a link to the Clean Money website.

Peace Pole changes - Darwin present the views of Virginia Bates on making the peace pole at the Los Altos Library more visible. After a discussion, we agreed that it was too complicated and our time is better spent on other issues.

  Future:

Possible speaker from the California Clean Money Campaign

Foothill College student who received the Larissa Keet Memorial Scholarship will be invited to a meeting of the LAVP to report on his peace project

Katrina will inform us which candidates are running for the Los Altos City Council so we can invite them to speak at our fall meetings about their perspectives on national and world affairs.
