November 12th Los Altos Voices for Peace meeting notes:

 
  WE ARE HOLDING A VERY IMPORTANT EVENT ON NOVEMBER 28TH CO-SPONSORED BY LOS ALTOS LIBRARY AND LOS ALTOS VOICES FOR PEACE.  THE TOPIC IS IRAQ:  THE WAR, THE PEOPLE, THE FUTURE.  SPEAKER: EMAD YAHYA
   
  PLEASE COME AND BRING OTHERS TO HEAR THIS OUTSTANDING SPEAKER TALK ABOUT THE CURRENT CONDITIONS IN IRAQ.  7-9 PM LOS ALTOS MAIN LIBRARY, SAN ANTONIO ROAD - REFRESHMENTS WILL BE SERVED!

--Peninsula and South Bay Iraq Moratorium Program is holding a rally and picketing at the Jeppesen Corp., in San Jose on Friday, Nov. 16 at noon.  Jeppesen is a CIA contractor aiding in the "extraordinary rendition" program.  Meet at 11:15 at the Mt. View Caltrains Station (Castro St.)  for easy transportation to the event - go to the first car to be with others going to Jeppsen at 225 W. Santa Clara, San Jose.

--Counter-recruitment:  we shared our concerns about military recruitment in the schools and will continue the discussion at our December meeting.  Katrina will come with some proposals. 

--Scott Ritter's book, "Waging Peace" was briefly discussed.  It is worthwhile reading for anyone involved in the peace movement.  Scott Ritter served in the military and was the chief UN Weapons Inspector in Iraq.  He is worried about the peace movement being ineffective because it is not focused towards ending the war.  There are too many factions and competing goals.
  
--Issues discussion:  We talked about some of the tactics used by organizations like CodePink "blood on our hands" and agreed that our work is focused on positive ways to educate and bring about peaceful resolution of conflicts. 
   
  - Next vigil to commemorate the next milestone - the death of 4,000 US soldiers in Iraq.  3,850 deaths have occurred in the Iraq war so far.  We  decided to wait to see what MoveOn has planned and possibly gather around the same time in Los Altos.   
   
  - Future plans for LAVP for 2008 were discussed.  A smaller group will meet before the December meeting and come with goals and proposals to present to the group.  Katrina will bring her master calendar.   
   
  Treasurer's Report:  We have $1,009 in our treasury.  (We have already paid $1,000 for the Foothill College Scholarship to be awarded in 2008). 
   
  Last meeting of LAVP for 2007:
  Monday, December 10th, 7-9 pm  at Foothills Congregational  Church, Orange Avenue near Foothill Expressway, Los Altos.
