Notes from Los Altos Voices for Peace Meeting, Sept. 10, 2007
SEE "OUT OF IRAQ" SECTION (near end) FOR UPCOMING VIGILS/PROTESTS.
Meet the Candidates:
Three of the candidates for Los Altos City Council attended the meeting
to let us know their goals/priorities and to answer questions that had
been submitted to them in advance. Ray moderated the discussion.
We heard from Ron Packard (incumbent), David Casas (incumbent) and
Randall Hull (candidate). There are four candidates running for three
council positions. Candidate Megan Satterlee could not attend the
meeting and has been invited to our Oct. 8 meeting.
Following their answers and comments on the submitted questions, the
candidates engaged in a lively and informative Q&A discussion and
exchange with LAVP members.
LAVP does not endorse candidates.
TREASURER's Report: Judy Staton reported $1500 in the treasury for
future LAVP/Larissa Keet Scholarships and $272 in unrestricted funds.
All bills are paid.
SCHOLARSHIP Fund: Karen Lemes presented materials with information about
the application process, and a list of other community groups (55 of
them) which offer scholarships and what their requirements are. Karen
noted that the $1000 scholarships get many more applicants. We voted to
offer one scholarship for that amount this year. Discussion followed
about clarifying our description of what we mean by "applicant must be
actively involved in promoting peace issues and activities". We must
have our description and payment to Foothill by Oct. 15. If you have
ideas please send them to Karen or Barbara O'.
COUNTER-Recruitment in Schools: Barbara Kyser attended a PPJC
presentation on September 4th in Palo Alto, which included a DVD on the
subject which was also broadcast on television. Ray is obtaining a copy
of that one hour program, which was both educational and alarming. It
was about the extensive military recruitment program and how pervasive
and aggressive it is in our society and schools. Some of the tactics
used by the recruiters are shocking. It depicted how youth are tracked
and pursued from a very young age all over our country. Barbara bought
and has read the book that was written by the two presenters. It is
called Army of None by Aimee Allison and David Solnit. Amiee was in the
military for seven years even though she had been accepted at Stanford.
Her parents could not help her pay for her school costs, so she joined
the army.
Iraq Moratorium: visit their website for more details:

The group hopes lots of people will take the Iraq Moratorium Pledge:
I hereby make a commitment that on Friday, September 21 & the Third
Friday of every subsequent month, I will break my daily routine and take
some action, by myself or with others, to end the War in Iraq."
Paul Engstrom contacted the moratorium sponsors for information on how
to create the "black ribbon" handouts which we may make at our next
meeting. If any of you are available to hand these ribbons and vigil
flyers out at the Mt. View Cal-Train station Friday from 7:30-9 AM,
please call Barbara 650-964-5068.
October 19 Iraq Moratorium Motorcade with all Pennisula Peace groups.
Details later.
Next Meeting, OCT. 8
Sami will chair the next meeting. We hope that the one remaining
candidate for Council, Megan Satterlee will be able to join us.

Note from Roy who attended our Aug. 28th vigil:
I just learned of a book that should be of interest to the
members of LA Voices for Peace. Its by Scott Ritter, former Marine
intelligence officer. He served as Chief Weapons Inspector for the
U.N.in Iraq from 1991 to 1998. The book is "Waging Peace: The Art of
War for the Antiwar Movement"
- sells for about $12.
